1884 - The first School Board Officers' Mutual Association is formed; later changed to The National Association of Board Officers

1887 - The title changes yet again to become The School Attendance Officers National Association

1902 - The new education act abolishes school boards and passes the responsibility for local education to county and borough councils

1918 - The new education act raises compulsory school age to 14 years

1933 - Children & Young Persons Act includes new child employment regulations

1936 - New education act raises the school leaving age to 15 years to become effective in 1939, but the outbreak of the second world war delays this being implemented until 1946

1939 - Title changes to the Education Welfare Officers National Association

1944 - The groundbreaking Butler Education Act introduces massive reforms to the state education system

1948 - New Children Act requires county & borough councils to establish Children's Departments (and some of you thought they were new!)

1968 - The Seebohm report recommends that all social work services, including local education welfare services, should become amalgamated into one generic service (it's now starting to sound all too familiar isn't it!)

1969 - The new Children & Young Persons Act introduces the power to undertake care proceedings as a means to deal with entrenched non-attendance at school

1971 - The Local Authority Social Services Act leads to the creation of social services departments, but the decision about whether or not education welfare services are amalgamated into these new departments is left as a matter for local discretion

1972 - The school leaving age is raised to 16 years

1973 - The Ralph's report on the role & training of education welfare officers

1977 - Title changes and we become the National Association of Social Workers in Education
