The Foundation Degree would enable students to develop a critical understanding of the way young people operate and an understanding and practical experience of engaging with them. Students would also gain the knowledge and understanding requirement for related National Occupational Standards in Learning Development and Support Services at NVQ Level 4. Students can work with young people in a number of settings linked to education and social care.
Level One prepares students for Higher Education study, introducing them to key topics and providing an overview/knowledge required when working with young people and young people's services. Level One will also provide an introduction to the skills required in order to work effectively with young people.
Students can expect to study from the following Level One modules:
Level Two will help broaden and deepen students' understanding of social exclusion, social capital, physiological and educational factors that influence young people' lives. Students will need to show critical understanding of the principles which inform the practice of work with young people and apply underlying concepts and principles to their practice and develop skills and understanding of learning processes that lead to change.
Students can expect to study from the following Level Two modules:
Teaching methods vary from lecture inputs, library based information gathering tasks, case studies, scenarios and simulations, role play small group discussion, video and use of the University's on-line learning system Blackboard, and various practical work based tasks many of which will take place in students supervised work practice. There will be personal tutoring which is especially important in this course. There will be no examinations. Assessment will be based on presentations, case studies, reports, self-assessments, reflective recordings and essays.
