Course Outline

The Foundation Degree in Working with Young People and Young people's Services will provide to those who want to work with children the opportunity to develop appropriate skills, knowledge and experience. Individuals will receive a nationally recognised and portable qualification.

Two and a half years part time study.

The course is designed to address the five key objectives of the 2003 green paper Every Child Matters (DES).

  2. Work based learning - The Reflective Practitioner
  3. Engaging and interacting with young people in practice History, development and emerging trends in service provision
  4. The nature of adolescence
  5. Research methods
  6. Work based learning; Reflective Practice for change
  7. Developing inter-agency approaches to working with young people
  8. Making a difference for young people. Evidenced based practice

The Course will last for five semesters of part-time study. Students attend for six hours each week. Applicants must be over 18 years of age but do not necessarily need any formal academic qualifications. Experience of working with young people is an advantage.

Entry Requirements

  1. A Level 3 Qualification in childcare such as: NVQ3; DCE;NND;NNEB; GCSE English Language Grade C or equivalent is also required
  2. At least two years recent and relevant experience in either pay or unpaid employment within a childcare setting
  3. A satisfactory reference from their employer, which indicates support for the student undertaking the Foundation Degree and in providing a mentor to support the student with the work based learning
  4. The ability to understand and make use of written material and are able to communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written English
  5. The expectation is that candidates would normally be mature, experienced practitioners with a Level 3 qualification in the field of childcare/ education

Course Costs

This course is costed per credit, you will need 120 credits for Level 1 and 120 credits for Level 2
